How much effect will 'Cap and Trade' really do to effect climate change?

Or will it just be another government program that hampers recovery, costs jobs in small businesses, drives more jobs and companies overseas, AND drive energy cost up on individuals?

Cap and Trade didn’t work in Europe. What makes liberals think it will work here?

I really hope so, because the Gulf Spill shows we need to find new sources of Energy.

This Bill will also create millions of jobs, by getting factories in the business of creating wind turbines.

I hope we do not let the Oil Companies win, because they want us depended on oil forever.

Why are we wasting time talking about "climate change" and the "environment" when 10% unemployment in the US?

I mean, this so-called "climate change" is supposed to happen 100 years from now, it’s not like us or our children will see it. And what exactly will happen? The temperature goes up 4 degrees? Oooo…

Why can’t we worry about the environment later and just focus on jobs now?
Why do we have to have that Copenhagen summit now? Maybe when the economy’s doing well, then we can indulge in Captain Planet, agreed?

Why do people oppose action on climate change on an economic basis?

Many people, especially free Market- advocates, often oppose federal action against climate change by saying that it would lead to an economic slowdown & job loss. Which I find ridiculous, since clean energy technologies would introduce far more jobs than would be lost by the Oil & coal industries. I was talking about this with my Dad (An ardent Conservative Republican) and he pointed out that with any new technology, entire new professions associated with it are introduced. For example, if wind power becomes a major source of energy for the US, we won’t just need people to make the turbines. We’ll need people to install, repair, maintain, develop, sell, & market the turbines. Environmental purity notwithstanding, with the oil industry falling out of favor, less American money will end up in the pockets of middle-eastern oil companies. And even if there IS an economic slowdown as a result, isn’t losing money better in the long run than going extinct?

Oh! I reiterate climate change and not global warming. Climate change is estimated to reduce productivity by 20% a conservative figure that does not include disaster cost. Plus, baby boomers are holding back retirement because of the economy so that means less jobs for younger Americans.

What is the best policy solution to global warming?

In order to address the threat from global warming we need significant greenhouse gas emissions reductions. A lot of people think we need to put a price on carbon emissions to accomplish this. Many also believe this will spur innovation and create ‘green jobs’. Fossil fuel technologies are already well developed, but renewable and alternative fuel technologies can continue to develop and become more advanced for a long time.

Taking everything into consideration – the climate, environment in general, economy, jobs, etc. – what do you think the best policy solution is for addressing global warming? Does it involve a carbon tax? A cap and trade system? Something else entirely?
