Is there anyway that we can make global warming stop for good?

Saying that global warming is real, is there anyway we can make it stop forever?

  1. Dana1981, Master of Science says:

No, there’s no reason to stop global warming forever. What we’re trying to do is stop the planet from warming too fast. Basically we want to remove the human influence on the global temperature, because it’s pretty stable as long as we don’t mess with it.

So what we need to do is reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, by about 80% on a global scale by the year 2050.

  2. Baccheus says:

Cut back CO2 emissions to the levels of the 1930s and replant the reforests, then wait a couple of decades for warming already occurred to reverse.
Realistically, no. All we can do at this point is to mitigate.

What is your goal? Do you like the temperature right now and want it to remain the same forever?

You see, in the past, temperature has never been stable, not in 4.5 billion years. So that means there are only two possible directions for temperature in the future, either up or down. Can we control climate and actually pick one or the other? Which way would it be going if we stopped all CO2 emissions? Let me know if you find that out.

  4. Mariela B says:

That would involve an idea and people to help and make this happen a movement to empower those of youth to start making a difference.

If nothing happens we will suffer the consequences of our actions in the future and we would be the ones to blame.

  5. MIKE L says:

    Turn off the sun.

  6. Conservative says:

What’s wrong with it? Global warming is not a problem. A warmer planet supports more life.

  7. Recycling Education says:

Stop Co2 emmisions completely. However impossible, we can cut it dramatically enough so that we dont see the effects of global warming for hundreds if thousands of years later or if we do nothing and get worse at producing Co2 the end of the world may come faster than we think.

  8. Syrocko says:

    Hi Concon,

Stopping man-made global warming completely seems pretty implausible at this point, at least for quite some time. The big issue is keeping the warming small enough to stop us from going into runaway climate change (when it feeds itself and will keep warming even without our input). If we can reduce CO2 levels considerably and achieve this, the threats associated with climate change are also likely to be more manageable. The trouble is, we don’t know exactly where the cut-off point is.

The urgency of global warming isn’t because it will all suddenly kick off if we haven’t done something within the next few months/years. When people talk like this what they mean is that if we don’t sort it out very soon, we run the risk of going past this point of no return. However, as far as I’ve read even the most pessimistic predictions don’t suggest that we’ll actually be seeing some of the worst effects for 30-40 years.

There are a lot of ways in which we can help as individuals. I have a lot of confidence in the Transition Towns movement http://www.tranisitontowns.org and would recommend getting involved if there’s one near you. At http://www.ecohuddle.com you’ll find heaps of other suggestions.

global warming is a farce, if you will notice, the only thing getting ‘greener’ is the inside of polititians big fat wallets.

  10. Michael says:

Well we need to conserve, and find alternative ways of energy, my personal favorite, solar, is probably the best. Germany produces over 50% of the solar power in the world.

All the small things help. One example is using Google’s Search engine Bellzar.com, it conserves energy with a black screen, gives its profits to charity, and gives the same quality search that Google offers.

All things count, turn off your lights when not in use, unplug un-used electronics, etc.

    Cheers

Can you stop a flood from occurring? Can you stop a glacier if it wants to retreat or grow? Man has been trying to control nature for at least 10,000 years and we haven’t been able to yet. Did the monks and priests at the start or the last mini ice age stop it from happening?

The Earth cycles naturally. If you do even a little research you will find out that man’s contribution to the total is at most 3.5% so out of the change that is occurring .035° of it is the responsibility of man which is at most the tolerance of the change.

Wow, the Earth’s climate is pretty stable with out man’s emissions? Then again that’s right, man caused the last major ice age, the mini ice age, and all three of the known warming periods that have occurred since 10,000 BC.

Also, for Baccahues who is saying to reduce CO2 levels to what it was during the 1930′s, the 1930′s were as hot then as it is today so we wouldn’t change anything and the CO2 levels were lower which doesn’t fit with the fact that the Earth cooled down from the end of WWII to the late 1970′s.

Well the answer depends what school of thought you in. Essentially there are two:

    1) Global warming is human caused.
It is believed global warming is brought on the industrial age and large CO2 emissions. In fact there is a correlation between CO2 and climate temperatures rising but theres no proof that CO2 rises temperature, it could very well be the other way around, that higher temperatures cause higher CO2 levels. The planets average temperature has risen gradually over the last 30 years and spiked over the last 10.

The simplest way to stop or stunt this change would be to conserve energy, create better, safer sources of energy and to stop depleating natural resources.

    2) Global warming is a natural occurance.
This is the idea that the rise in temperature is part of Earth’s cycle and therefor nothing can be done to stop it, and it would unnatural to do so. Earth’s average yearly temperature over the last 20,000 years has jumped up and down varying in 100 of degrees (science gets this info from ice cores in the arctic). Also, its this is the same planet that slips in and out of ice ages so its makes sense for there to be a shift in average temperature.

The answer for this belief is there is nothing we can do, only prepare. Humans adapts to all kinds of stuff, its pretty much what we’re best at.

As you can probably tell I don’t think global warming is human caused and I’d think a lot more people would agree if they had all the information presented to them. Big media does a poor job of presenting the other side of the "climate change" argument. They rarely present anyone who have beliefs for the natural occurrence idea aside from trying to make some Republican look loony.

This is link to a website where over 19,000 scientists signed a petition disagreeing with the human caused theory or at least think its flawed. http://www.oism.org/pproject/s33p1845.htm

I doubt that we are causing it to start with. Here is a good article that explains this.
